How to Hang Canvas Art with and without Frame?

Want to hang up canvas art with or without a frame? We’ve got you covered! – With these easy home art styling tips. Check the video here.

What types of art can be hung unframed?

Lightweight art, are paintings on board paper that can be affixed to a wall without any concern for excess weight burdening the hanging device or possibly damaging the piece itself. Canvases can also be secured on the wall without a frame, provided they're not too large or unwieldy. It will also look better if the sides of the canvas are painted rather than blank. Simply prop the open section inside the wood frame onto two sizeable nails (which will keep the piece more levelled than using one).

Framed canvas hanging methods:

1. With nails.

Luckily, most canvas art prints are designed with the canvas stretched over a wood frame. But when you don’t have a frame, or simply prefer the look of a frame-less art, you can simply hammer a nail in the spot where you want the art, and hang the art directly on it!

2. With wire hooks.

If your art piece is completely flat on the back without a visible frame or indentations for hanging, you can always install a wire hook on it yourself. Take two “o” screws (screws with a curved, hook-like top half) and screw them into both sides of the wall art canvas, approximately five inches below the top.

3. By leaning.

Of course, you can always bypass hanging altogether. If you would rather keep your walls hole-free, consider leaning your art against them. Leaning instead of hanging, especially when done by layering smaller canvas prints on a shelf or fireplace mantel, brings a refreshing, laid back spin to a more conventional decorating method.

Frame-less canvas hanging method:

1. Binder or thumbtack

A frame-less canvas can be pinned to the wall with a binder or pushpin. It is recommended to pin it to the four corners of the canvas to increase stability.

2. Double-sided tape

You can use double-sided tape to paste around the back of the canvas to form a double-sided tape frame and then unfold and paste it in the appropriate position on the wall.
